This Candy Challenge Took Me Down The Memory Lane.
This candy challenge took me down the memory lane! I just couldn’t stop smiling as I remembered little Amanda.
Little Amanda stood with wet eyes behind her mom’s seat in a small clinic. The nurse sitting beside her mother pulled a certain liquid from a tinted dwarf glass bottle using a syringe.
Her mother and the nurse seemed to enjoy the conversation they had so much that the nurse covered the needle of the injection and kept it aside, reclining to her seat. Amanda sighed at the nurse’s gesture, hoping she’ll forget the injection entirely.
“Why’re you standing behind me?” her mother finally noticed and pulled her forward in one swift move.
“Aww, it won’t be painful”, the nurse said making Amanda whimper because even her little brain could detect the lie she just heard.
“I’ll be with you dear”, her mother said which didn’t help either.
“I want to go!” Amanda finally said, chocking on her own tears.
“C’mon”, her mom cajoled her, gradually pulling her to her laps. Amanda hesitantly complied but as soon as the nurse walked closer with the injection, adrenaline kicked in and Amanda tried to run off her mom’s strong grip.
“Stay put”, her mom said, trying to hold her in place. When did it change from a sweet cajole to a violent tug of war?
Amanda’s unrest worsened with the sudden transformation of her mother’s attitude. Finally, she was able to wiggle her fragile body out of her mother’s arms and maybe legs too.
“Baby girl”, her mother started again with a soft voice.
“Mommy no!” Amanda protested, this time wailing with tears and catarrh and sweat all mushed up on her face.
“What do you want?”
“I want to go home”
“We’ll go home after you take your shot honey”, her mother said. “Aren’t you my strong girl anymore?”
“I don’t want to take a shot”
“Alright. Let’s make a bet. If you take this shot, I will buy you whatever you want”, she promised, “Anything at all”
Amanda became a bit calm, searching her mother’s eyes for any form of mischief. When she didn’t find any, she pouted.
“Anything at all?”
Amanda glanced at the nurse who just smiled in the corner, then at her mother.
“come here, my baby”, her mother said and slowly she moved towards her mom.
When it was time for her to take the shot, she tried to be brave. She flinched when the needle pierced her butt.
“Ouch”, was what she screamed and it was soon over and as promised she got what she wanted—Candy.
After that day, she had been bribed with candy to quietly take her injections until she grew up and learnt to tolerate the pain of being injected with or without candy. Little Amanda that used to run away from needles now begs to be injected rather than given pills.
Little Amanda is me and her mother is my mother.
I must say that using candy to help me get over my needle fright was a very smart move my mother took. Now, I appreciate it.
I am sure there are many witty parents out there that have used what their children value so much to bring out the best in them. Being a parent is definitely not an easy task so I’m going to use today’s post to cheer to them!!
